Leadership Opportunities

Steering Committees

Steering Committees lead the work in each neighborhood.  The Steering Committee is the heart of the formal community platform of relationships and neighborhood advocates. Each community now has a steering committee that represents the fabric of the community with members that are active in the process and decision making. There 48 steering committee members total. The steering committees, like the neighborhoods, are very diverse, by race, gender, occupation.

The Steering Committees have led organizing processes that have engaged:

  • 1281 people completed surveys.
  • 262 individuals participated in one-on-one interviews.
  • 420 community residents and other stakeholders participated in action groups.
  • 31 new Steering Committee members arouse from the community organizing process.
  • 52 Community Champions (new leaders) stepped forward.

Now they lead project implementation and fundraising. To join a Steering Committee, link to your home neighborhood:

Community Champions

Have an idea you’d like to get started?  Contact your neighborhood’s Lead Organizer to hear about opportunities to join the initiative as a community champion. Community champions have hosted talent shows, block parties, and neighborhood watches.  They have created gathering spaces, artistic events, and are launching businesses.

Each year, a mini grant process awards funds to the most promising ideas to improve neighborhood quality of life.  Funding is available at different times each year.  Lead Organizers can also help you meet other volunteers, community organizations, or potential funding partners to launch your ideas.
